/It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give water as a gift from the spring of the water of life. -Revelation 21:6
Is it just me, or has it been raining forever? As I sit and write, a gray morning that turned into a misty afternoon has become a pouring evening. The forecast right now says rain or showers all week except for maybe a little sun peeking through on Wednesday. In this long, gradual and imperceptibly warming spring, I know that the flowers and leaves are taking their time, giving us more time to enjoy their unfolding. I understand that our water table is rising, bringing much needed reserves for what will likely be a hot summer. I recognize that there are areas of this country and world that would dance a jig to have just one day like today. And… I’m still looking forward to the end of all this rain.
In this passage from the Revelation, John hears the voice of God saying, “It is done.” I’m hearing this not as “everything is over now.” Instead, I’m hearing “Consider it done already.” Don’t you worry. Despite the rain that falls in life, I’m taking care of all the most important things even when you can’t see it. All will be well. All will be reconciled. Come, drink water as a gift from the spring of the water of life.
What is that spring of the water of life be like? New Hampshire has beautiful water tumbling over rocks and stones, cascading through waterfalls, and filling springs that are swirling and dancing and alive. But I imagine that God’s spring of the water of life is even more cool, clear and sparkling than any water I’ve seen. And I imagine the taste of that water to be remarkable and sweet in a way I’ve never tasted before. And yet, I’m offered that water right here and right now whenever I am thirsty.
People of faith are called to trust God is always up to something good, even when we cannot see it - even despite evidence around us to the contrary at times - like weeks and weeks of gray days. The water of life is all around us, beyond our thoughts, beyond our reality, beyond our knowing, nourishing and hydrating us in ways we may not even notice. What a good feeling on a rainy day.
God is making all things new - today, tomorrow and always!
